Varun’s Hate Speech

Varun Gandhi has committed a big mistake in his attempt to impress Hindu voters. He claims that the videos are forged. I personally don't buy his story. In any case, slapping NSA on him is an overreaction by the Mayawati government. Such overreaction would only create sympathy for Varun and as a result the mistake he has done may lose focus. Lalu has gone a step further and says that he would crush him using a roller. It is really disgusting to hear such things for a senior politician. If Mayawati and Lalu are thinking that they can get the support of Muslims with such hate actions and statements, they have totally misunderstood Islam. What else can we expect from our politicians who want to capitalize on every possible opportunity? Though I strongly condemn Varun's comments, I feel sorry for him - he has become a victim of dirty politics.

Muslims voters should not get carried away by the actions and utterances of politicians. They should look through the tactics of the politicians and decide with a clear mind. I am not against voting for Mayawati or Lalu. But, one should not vote for them just because they have shown hate towards Varun. Hate has no place in Islam.

  1. Varun's statement is defensive of Hindus and was against terrorists which I think is not a "hate speech". It is a strong message. It is also not against Muslims (unless you interpret all terrorists = Muslims). But the current reaction seems like everyone promoting the notion that terrorist = Muslims, therefore any statement against terrorist is against Muslims.

Looking at the hateful response just for a non-issue statement like that shows the depth of anti-Hindu sentiments prevailing in the Indian politics and Indian media. This I see as an unhealthy trend and Hindus have all rights to protect and defend their interest at all time.

  2. Maha Vishnu,

First of all, Varun has said that the videos are doctored. The problem is resolved if the CDs are proved to be doctored. Going by the videos that are published by the media, Varun says "he will cut the hands of those who attack Hindus" - I am perfectly fine with that statement. But there is an instance in which he demonizes Muslims names and also makes fun of Muslims contesting in elections by saying a story about a small girl asking if Osama is contesting in the elections. He also says that he would cut the head of *******. All these statements are unacceptable.

We will know the truth when the court verdict is out.

  3. Even if he has made fun of names , I dont know how that becomes so offensive , people routinely make fun of different type of names, be it the long and complicated south indian names or the short and sweet sardar names, I havent seen peopel so agitated and here you claim a whole community is agitated ?

take it easy mate and think rationally leaving your burden of religion behind :)

  4. Ayush,

You are mixing up two different statements from me. I said that he demonizes Muslim names – this is not something funny. If you have seen the video, you will know that the tone was also not funny.

Next, I said he made fun of Muslims contesting elections – implying that all Muslims who look like Osama are terrorists. It is definitely not funny if you walk up to someone and say “you are a terrorist”.

  5. Boss, the problem is what i said .. the baggage of your religion with you , even Obama's name was made fun of , he was also called Osama ?? what do you have to say abt that ... I didnt here too many noises from the Obama campaign on this.

If you see the video again , the tone definitely was humorous, dont knw why you didnt find it funny, see the video again, this time without your baggage.

It was just a funny illustration with an anecdote of his kid neice in reference, he just said his kid neice thought it was Obama ... for any rational person this can only be humorous.

Its a fact he was addressing a particular community and made jokes which might at the max not been in good taste, but it was not he who had wanted the speech to played for everyone who might not understand his sense of humour.

If he has said he would chop of the hands of Muslims (has taken the name of the community) I would be teh first to condemn such a statement.

just try to get out of the victim complex and you will see this a much better world.

  6. The part where Varun mentions that the names Karimullah and Nazarullah are very scary was definitely not in a funny tone. The crowed was also listening seriously, no laughter or applause.

Then when he continues to talk about the SP candidate, he did have a funny tone as I mentioned earlier.

Even if it had been a joke – it was in very bad taste.

In US, even a hate speech is generally allowed except in case of certain conditions like inciting violence, etc. That law may be suitable for them because of the level of maturity in their population. Varun should have had a better understanding of the level of decency expected out or someone running for parliament.

Varun did say “Yeh panja nahi hai, yeh kamal ka haath hai, yeah *** ka galey ko kaat dega”. I don’t know what the exact word he mentioned was – I have no problem if he had said “criminals” or other similar words. However, there is an issue if he had said “Muslims”. My reaction would be the same even if he had mentioned “Hindus” or “Christians”.
